An extensive industrial complex situated in the suburbs of the capital is dealing with nuclear pollution after an official team detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two production plants inside the area, which encompasses businesses that export frozen marine products.

The finding has triggered immediate decontamination operations and the moving of local residents, coming after a comparable contamination scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.

Investigation and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian authorities launched an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp sent by an Indonesian firm.

Officials released an warning advising distributors and retailers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was well under the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA stated: “The main health effect of concern following extended, repeated small amount contact (for example through eating of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an elevated risk of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Examinations

Radioactivity tests revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing zone were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the 21 additional production facilities, but confirmed they would promptly undergo cleanup procedures conducted by the country's nuclear agency.

A senior official declared that people living in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was cleaned, adding that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities also conducted examinations on nearby employees and people located close to the manufacturing zone, finding 9 individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Plans

The contaminated sites will immediately undergo cleanup procedures by the national atomic energy agency. Authorities have further selected the site of a scrap metal plant as an isolation center for polluted materials.

Indonesia, which operates no atomic energy facilities or weapons programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from overseas.

An official spokesperson told reporters that scrap metal imports were the likely cause of contamination and announced the government would promptly impose restrictions on metal waste imports. It was stated that transport were additionally being checked for potential exposure as they moved through the area.
