We are checking images and video posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
