Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor stated when questioned about contemplating a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic House seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," he declared, after a recent fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to fatalities and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team said in a recent statement countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A recently conducted poll revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor should run for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
