Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Recent Detentions
Miami put up eighty-six first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were focused as they put up 86 opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year history.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an league probe into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
