Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
