Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
