During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
