Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming President.
Following a conclusive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Built On Law and Order and Migration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily focused on promises to tackle growing insecurity and radically curb migration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the inauguration or face removal.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as building camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Broader Wave
Many commentators view Kast's success as part of a broader right-wing trend in Latin America, following this year's political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Clear Majority
Despite his decisive popular vote victory, Kast will not have an clear majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.
This political landscape could hinder his agenda, such as a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a plan for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are many questions about how a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will implement them," noted a political expert.
The expert added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However the area with much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
