A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts
The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.
Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."
